When I got this bright and beautiful flower fabric I knew that it just HAD to be a maxi skirt. I envisioned a bold, high/low maxi skirt and decided to use the Duchess pattern from Do It Better Yourself Club. It’s a simple pattern and I figured I would have it sewn up within and hour or two………but I was wrong!
I didn’t pay enough attention to the pattern and ended up cutting on the fold on the wrong side, which would create a seam all the way down the front. I was upset it wasn’t going to turn out how I’d hoped, but I knew I had to think of a way to save it since I love the fabric!

Since there wasn’t much fabric leftover, I decided to cut 2 inch strips of fabric and sew them together to create a ruffle along the bottom hem. I had to hand gather all the ruffles, which took forever, since the ruffle foot on my machine wasn’t gathering them like a I wanted. I attached the ruffle on the bottom and slightly overlapped the front pieces to create a wrap skirt.
I was worried the skirt still wouldn’t look that great after “fixing” it but I am thrilled with how it turned out! Now I’m a little happy with my cutting mistake :). I paired with a wrap crop top from Amazon and I love it!

The Duchess skirt pattern is a FREE pattern and had extremely well written instructions, perfect for beginners, or those looking for an easy sew.
